 Introduction:
The North American Forest Insect Work Conference (NAFIWC) is the conclave of the forest entomology community. The conference convenes every five years to provide a forum for discussion of contemporary issues in forest entomology. The agenda is broad-based and includes topics relating to research, development, application, management, and education. The 2011 conference theme is "Bridges to the Future." The theme recognizes our host city, Portland, Oregon, also known as Bridgetown due to the many bridges crossing the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Bridges connect people with each other, places, and events. The goals of the conference are to explore and strengthen important connections between forest entomology and (i) allied scientific disciplines, (ii) the management of forest ecosystems, (iii) the larger social, political, and biophysical environment in which forest entomologists work, and (iv) among generations of forest entomologists during a period of rapid change. Desired outcomes include clarifying the current state of knowledge and identifying critical issues where future emphasis should be directed.
 Purpose:
The NAFIWC draws together forest entomology professionals, practitioners, scientists, educators, and students from across North America: US, Canada, and Mexico. It serves to integrate and unify the annual regional conferences: the Southern Forest Insect Work Conference, the Western Forest Insect Work Conference, the North Central Forest Pest Workshop, and the Northeastern Forest Pest Council. Participants include representatives from government agencies, NGOs, academia, and industry. It is the only conference where the full complement of forest entomologists assemble to discuss the state of their enterprise.
 Approach:
The 2011 conference will feature plenary sessions in which invited speakers will provide their insight into contemporary issues in the science and practice of forest entomology. The major emphasis of the meeting will be moderated concurrent workshops dealing with topics that embrace the scope and bounds of forest entomology. In developing the program, the entire forest entomology community will be asked to identify specific agenda topics. There will also be a featured poster session throughout the conference.
 History:
| The NAFIWC has convened four times: 1991 in Denver, CO; 1996 in San Antonio, TX; 2001 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and 2006 in Asheville, NC. Each conference featured a robust agenda that not only encompassed the topics that comprise the traditional core of forest entomology, but also issues of contemporary importance. The principal benefit of the conferences was information exchange which was accomplished through plenary addresses, workshop presentations and discussion, and social interaction among the participants. The accomplishments of the conferences were captured in published proceedings. Participation in the conferences has ranged from about 275 to 375 registrants. |
